Professor, Vice President for WVU Research
In the Fall of 1990, Professor King started his academic career at West Virginia University as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry. He served as the Director of Graduate Studies within the Department of Chemistry prior to his appointment as the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Education in the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences.
His research interests are in glow discharge mass spectrometry, protein mass spectrometry. He has taught a range of courses in the Department of Chemistry while maintaining an active, externally funded research program generating peer reviewed publications. To date 12 students have completed their Ph.D.’s and 5 students have completed their M.S.’s under Professor King’s guidance. Currently there are 4 Ph.D. students working with him. His former students have gone on to employment within academia, private industry, national laboratories, and the military.
President Jim Clements appointed Fred King as the vice president for research at West Virginia University. The appointment was effective Jan. 1. 2013. King, who has filled the position in an interim capacity for almost a year.
